You Can’t Tame a Tiger
A boy worries that Imran, his tiger friend, doesn't look or act like a real tiger. After all, he isn't orange, nor does he have any stripes. So the boy paints Imran to look like other animals to help him escape sticky social situations. But when the boy paints stripes to make Imran look like a tiger, that's where Imran draws the line. Through Imran, the boy learns that it is what's on the inside that counts.
This story is special to me because it was the very first children's story I ever wrote! I grew up in a multicultural environment where none of us fit into neat labels and boxes. I wanted to celebrate our differences and show that we can be whoever we want to be, regardless of what others expect.
